16th Treatment at the Block Center

There were no new tests to report on during this visit. The routine blood work continues to remain within acceptable ranges. Cathy's vital signs were also good. She continues to have some knee pain, which we pray will heal soon so that she may resume the level of exercise that she is used to. She also has a few itchy spots left on her scalp.

Now for the good news!! The "pins and needles" sensation which accompanied her neuropathy is totally gone from her hands and feet. She has constantly felt this since February! This is an encouraging sign that her nerves are regenerating from the damage caused by the chemotherapy. There is a  "window of opportunity" of 6 to 12 months for her nerves to heal. Please pray that Cathy will be able to continue with the cold laser therapy to help heal the remaining numbness and loss of function.

To celebrate Cathy's birthday, Suzanne Baker provided a lovely picnic lunch complete with china, tablecloth and wine glasses for our herbal tea! She tried some new recipes for corn bread (one of Cathy's favorites!) and vegetarian soup. We also sang many Christmas songs and hymns during this trip. Cathy continues to display a wonderful sense of humor and God's grace.

During this Christmas season of gifts, let us remember;

"But because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."   Ephesians 2: 4-9

DUH!

Today happens to be the anniversary of my birthday. All day I had been personally wished happy birthday, rec'd e-mail birthday wishes, phone calls....and not once did I consider, really, what it meant. Until I was checking out at a thrift shop, that is. Not quite sure now how the conversation began, but the clerk mentioned one of her daughter's whose birthday was yesterday. I replied that she shares my 10 year old's birth date and that mine was today, and I was having a great time shopping. For some reason that I can't remember now--blame it on the chemo that I'm no longer getting--she mentioned actually being a year older with a birthday. All day I knew it was my birthday, but never connected it w/being three hundred sixty-five days older. It's like a light bulb went off. Oh my gosh--I'm 55!

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be...
                                                                                                                           Psalm 139:16b

In the video in the previous blog, what struck me is #1-the doctors gave this man no hope of restoring "total" function of legs; #2-a stranger cared enough to try and help him; #3-the man was willing to be proactive in restoring his health. What discipline! What an inspiration!

15th Treatment At The Block Center

Vitals good. That is, with the exception of having gained a whole 2 lbs. I've been told that this is a side effect of the Arimidex Major bummer! I'll just have to pull out the big guns to maintain my optimum weight. That, plus loads of discipline.

Jen, the PA, indicated my latest echo cardiogram was about the same as the last one; blood work was good; and the bone scan showed some degeneration in the lower portion of the spine (which I'm confident is pretty normal for a gal my age), with uptake (of the radioactive medicine) in left sixth rib, which could be from an injury (like falling over a tent stake) or coughing/hacking episodes like I had 4-6 months ago; none of which are of concern to the doctors. There was also low-grade uptake into the left sinus area (didn't realize I even had a sinus issue).

When she inquired about the state of the neuropathy in my fingers, I had to concentrate before answering--that's how much it has improved! Subjectively, I would say that I'm at 95% function. The carpal tunnel is still an issue, but I've had that for a very long time.

Due to a minor incident a few weeks ago involving my heart when at a resting state, we did an EKG there at the Center. It came out normal.

Have had a knee issue for a few months now. After talking with the physical therapist up there, and she with the PA, Jen recommended I see an Orthopaedic, thinking perhaps they would want a picture of it so we could perhaps get a better idea of what is going on. I'm positive this is NOT cancer related, but old age. In the meantime, I'll continue with strengthening exercises for muscles surrounding the knee (thank you, Stacia), and keep up with the Ibuprofen.

Overall, a pretty routine trip, this past Tuesday. We took the two youngest girls with us and I think they appreciated seeing what my routine is like up there, but not so sure they'd want to make the trek again. 'Tis a long drive and even longer when you make a stop in Whole Foods and then have to drive in stop-and-go traffic. No complaints, it's just the way it is.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
- Psalm 46:1

Latest requested bone scan results came out clean. No word on the echo cardiogram, but I'm not expecting anything different there. No word, yet, on the routine blood work done prior to each treatment, but I suspect next Tuesday will be a "thumbs up" for treatment.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving...Psalm 147

Friday, November 9, 2012

This was Lupron injection day. Since I don't have to connect with the Dr. or PA, the staff is efficient in processing me. And, had the pleasant surprise of an "old" friend having the honors of needling me. Thank you, JL.

After leaving the cancer center, I went next door for my nuclear medicine injection, blew a couple of hours shopping, then returned for the 30 min. series of scans. More running around on the way home. I thought "killing two birds with one stone" would be a great idea but discovered perhaps an extra trip on another day would be wiser.

There is a common question that everyone seems to be asking me, of late, and that is, "how do you feel?"  Know that I have no complaints, and if you ever do catch me complaining, give me 50 lashes
w/some wet noodles.

I will share w/you that there are some small raised areas on my head of late. I suspicion this is, once again, caused by the estrogen inhibitors. They don't itch. I have much for which to be thankful.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!  Phillipians 4

14th Treatment at the Block Center

Today, Cathy received her latest CT Scan results. To quote. "Numerous lesions of the liver, predominantly involving the right hepatic lobe, are somewhat smaller when compared to the prior study, suggesting a response to therapy."

Or, we can simply say that the cancerous tumors in the liver continue to shrink even with the new hormone therapy! Cathy's blood work also supports this as her tumor markers are still falling. The cancer antigen CA 27.29 is currently at 64.6 and CA 15.3 is at 50.3.

In order to be thorough in monitoring Cathy's health, the Block Center has ordered a bone scan along with a routine echocardiogram prior to her next visit.

It was a very blustery "Winnie-the-Pooh" kind of day driving to and from Chicago. For lunch we ate "comfort foods" consisting of tomato soup, chicken and noodle soup, macaroni and cheese and cherry berry crumble. All prepared vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free - and yes, they were quite yummy.

We do thank each one of you for your support and prayers.

Feeling well. People tell me I look great (I think what they mean is I don't look ill at all). And my hair is growing ever longer, and a little darker. I'll have to work on getting my picture enlarged so you all can tell.

If I don't fit in at least one nap by early afternoon, I begin to drag--like today. But I wanted to post before turning in. Getting in that mid-afternoon nap is one area in which I have to make a conscientious effort some days.

My biceps are looking a little less flabby ("little" is the operative word here) which should be an indicator of keeping up with my free weight exercises. I personally love to exercise, it's just that my body screams against it sometimes. Who am I kidding?--lots of the time!

Yes, the diet can feel lacking/boring/stale at times, but the mindset just simply has to be changed. I'm not there yet (please forgive me "A Team").  To move from the standard American diet to a plant based one is a crucial component to my restoration of longevity in health. I will make it!

CT scan, today. I must've been really excited about it because I showed up at the imaging center a whole hour early!  The staff were most kind to squeeze me in, however.
Will learn of results during my next trip to the Block Center, Tues., October 30th.

Heaven is not here, it's There.

Heaven is not here, it's There. If we were given all we wanted here, our hearts would settle for this world rather than the next.
God is forever luring us up and away from this one, wooing us to Himself and His still invisible Kingdom,
where we will certainly find what we so keenly long for.

"Running aground," then is not the end of the world. (Read about the apostle Paul's voyage in Acts,
chapter 27, especially verses 23-26.)  But it helps to make the world a bit less appealing. It may even be God's answer to "Lead us not into temptation" - the temptation complacently to settle for visible things.

13th Treatment at the Block Center

It was a beautiful autumn drive to Chicago. We are grateful for the safe travel that God granted to us again!

Upon arrival, Cathy was examined by Jen. All of her vital signs and lab results continue to be within normal ranges. Cathy received her Vitamin I.V. hydration and Herceptin.

We enjoyed a delicious meal of autumn stew, cornbread, kale chips and mulled apple cider. This vegetarian  food was prepared for us by the chefs at the Block Center. Lunchtime is usually a highlight of our day.

Cathy continues to be a wonderful patient with a great sense of humor. Her only complaint is a sore knee while she exercises. Sarah, the physical therapist, was able to give suggestions. She also checked Cathy's level of neuropathy. Her hands are at 85-87% and her feet are 78-80%. Cathy will continue with supplements and cold laser therapy to help restore function in her extremities that were damaged by the chemotherapy. Most of the healing will happen within a 12 month period.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

THE DIVINE RULE OF LIFE---Oswald Chambers

What follows is a quote from Chambers' Devotions for Morning and Evening:

The Example Our Lord gives us is not that of a good man, or even of a good Christian, but of God Himself. "Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect, " show to the other man what God has shown to you; and God will give us ample opportunities in actual life to prove whether we are perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. To be a disciple means that we deliberately identify ourselves with God's interests in other people. "That ye love one another; as I have loved you..."

I continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude for all of you who have chosen to walk this journey of healing with me.

12th Treatment at the Block Center

Cathy continues to receive hormone drug therapy which is a combination of Herceptin, Lupron and Arimidex.

All aspects of her blood work remain within normal limits or continues to show improvement.

Her scalp is healing nicely where they removed the skin lesion. The other "bumps" have all cleared up which we attribute to the antibiotics. It appears to have been a bacterial infection.

We also want to thank Suzanne for joining us on the trip - it was a great day.

BOY? GIRL?

A baby gender party. Whatever in the world is that?! Found out this evening--and what a fun time. This grandma really thought she'd be holding her first grandchild of the male persuasion (perhaps #2). Little Jane Catherine (I'm hoping her Mother won't mind my calling her Janie Cate, at least once in awhile). There is no mistakin' the ultra sound pictures--Jane is quite photogenic. Had she been a boy, they would have named him William Scott, after his Grandpa Scott Wunderlich.

Sons (and daughters) are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from them. Psalm 127:3

GREAT NEWS!

The cyst removed from head---NOT cancer.

I give thanks to the Lord; making known what he has done. I sing praise to him, telling of his wonderful act. Glory to him; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Looking to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. (somewhat paraphrased--IChron.16).

Will have another treatment Tuesday, September 18.

THE HONING AND SHAPING CONTINUES...

Dear Readers, my husband is making fun of me for considering letting you all know that I made it to the dermatologist to have the head lesion checked out, before the results are known. How many people truly want to know every minute of your day? He's right.

However, it was a new experience for me and I can now relate to myriads of patients who must have a "lob" (the Dr.'s term) removed. Kind of like going to the dentist for a major filling; only, of course, the needle is injected on top of the head rather than in the gum/cheek. EWW!

Up side: I no longer have the obnoxious growth; down side: he cut my hair--just when it's really started to grow back!

I empathize with all who must undergo this type of procedure; one I hope I never have to endure again. BUT, if I do, I do.

Thank you, Lori, for holding my hand. :-)

11th Treatment at the Block Center

On Tuesday, August 28th, we had the opportunity to discuss additional treatments and overall strategy with Dr. Keith Block. It was decided to "stay the course" with the current plan until Cathy's next CT Scan in October.

The results from three tests; Cathy's brain MRI, her echocardiogram and bone density, were all normal!  Even the blood work that is drawn every 3 weeks continues to show improvement with her liver enzymes, white blood cells etc...

However, it is with mixed emotions, that I report that Cathy has developed a large skin lesion on her scalp which 'erupted' yesterday. The Block Center has requested a biopsy to determine if the cancer has metastasized to her skin. Jen, at the Block Center, said that it could also be a yeast/bacterial infection. That appointment is scheduled with a dermatologist, on September 4th, in Fort Wayne.

Phil 4: 6-7  "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

ON ENCOURAGEMENT

As defined by Funk & Wagnall, encourage means "to inspire with courage, hope, or resolution." We are exhorted by Paul; for example, in I Thessalonians 5, to encourage one another and build each other up. In thankfulness to all who have encouraged me in word, providing me the determination to keep on keeping on. You are great role models for me to be an encourager to others.

LUPRON #2

Met w/Dr. Aggarwal (my oncologist here in town) briefly to discuss any issues created from the hormonal drugs I'm taking in place of chemo. Just one: a handful of pimples on the head that I can't seem to resist eventually scratching open, then dousing them in hydrogen peroxide, and placing a little dab of antibiotic on them. (TMI?).

My Lupron shot is administered in the Infusion room (actually the shot itself is given in a little private room of that area). But what I'd like to comment on is how very different the atmosphere is in this conventional cancer health facility than that which I experience at the Block Center.

It brings to mind, once again, how immensely grateful I am for the opportunity to restore my health at an integrative cancer center. Keeping all of you in prayer who have shown, and continue to show, your loving kindness.

Luke 10:27
..."Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, love your neighbor as yourself."

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Recently, a friend passed on this quote to me by William Wilberforce. I found it to be of great encouragement and hope that all of you do as well.

"...we are reminded that Jesus possessed little, yet He never complained. And if we find ourselves in circumstances of greater difficulty than the normal ups and downs of daily life, we deal with these difficulties through the filter of our vision of Christ on the cross. What He suffered for our benefit outweighs almost anything we must deal with. We face challenges and difficulties as part of God's plans and purposes for our life, knowing that in the midst of difficulty, He is there. We have confidence that even though we might not understand everything that happens to us, God will work all things out in a way that accomplishes His purpose. If this means we go through disappointment, illness, shame, or poverty, we are able to trust Christ. He is the One who went before and will bring us through. In Ways beyond comprehension there is a sense of God's grace and peace in the midst of difficulty."

10th Treatment at the Block Center

One of the tools that the Block Center uses to determine if treatment is effective is a blood test for cancer tumor markers. With Cathy's type of cancer they check CA 27.29 and CA 15-3 antigens. Here are the results since treatment began in January 2012:

     CA 27.29                                                 CA 15-3
January 2012          7748.7                           7153.0
March   2012          1082.4                           1223.0
July       2012              68.7                              69.8

These results are so encouraging as we watch the numbers plummet!

Overall Cathy's health continues to improve. Her vital signs remain normal. The rest of the blood work is good. Her low number of white blood cells and neutrophils continue to reflect the cumulative results of her previous chemotherapy treatments. Since this has stopped, we hope to see these numbers rebound. Cathy will continue with the hormone therapy in her battle against cancer.

It's always a pleasure to travel with Cathy to Chicago for treatments. We were blessed that Abbie, her daughter, could join us for this trip.

DEPRESSION?

Had a not so fun experience not long ago. I didn't see it coming; just woke up one morning and it was there. Lasted only a couple of days, thankfully, and this has occurred only a few times throughout my adult life.

What I felt was a nothingness about anything through the course of the day. I'd go through the motions but without "meaning" in what I did or said.

The question for me to be answered was not "how did I get here?" but "how do I get out of this place of deadness?"

A dear friend of mine suggested that perhaps the correct term to best describe what I had gone through is weariness. If this is true, do I consider it as the catalyst to this latest episode? And, does that mean I'm mentally and physically weary in the fight for my life? I don't appreciate this thought; it makes me sound pathetic and weak. Which I am, but that gives me no excuse to ever willingly make the choice to run off course.

By the end of our conversation the two of us had considered several ways to fight against this state of weariness and I've decided that one of the best tools would be to read from the book of Psalms. This collection of prayers, poems and hymns are so full of wisdom, encouragement, and praise that the darkness would not be able to maintain its hold.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN?

Finally managed to set up getting my Lupron injection here in town with Dr. Aggarwal, an oncologist. Learned the important lesson to NEVER schedule an appointment around nap time, however. I'm sure Dr. Aggarwal thought I was a total loony.
My brain ceases to connect dots around that time of day. It is a very good thing that my dear friend, Lori, was with me to fill in all the conversation holes I created. Thank you, Lori, for your great patience.

The Doctor inquired of me several questions of personal nature. One, in particular, seems to be routinely asked that I'm always curious as to what answer is expected. That is, "how are your kids dealing with this?" Of course, my answer is always the same, "just fine." I am so thankful that they all seem to have a proper
perspective on the Author and Perfecter of life.

TREATMENT #9

What follows is a summary of events from our most recent trip up to Evanston, IL.
Notes were taken by one of our indispensable "A Team" members, Lori.
It's just too easy for me to copy and paste. Ignore what is tmi for you, personally.
We continue to be encouraged that we are on the right track w/treatment regimen.

Block Center Thursday, July 12, 2012 (9th Treatment)
Vitals and weight were all good.

You had cold laser therapy and reflexology with Sheila.

Today, you met with Jen. She discussed your current side effects; neuropathy in your hands and feet, a small amount of nosebleeds and periodic changes where your body feels warm but not like a hot flash.

She emphasized that an echocardiogram needs to be done every three months. The next one should be in August (maybe September, if you need to coordinate with Dr. Schleinkofer, but no later!)

She reviewed your blood work and it looked fine.

Jen encouraged you to incorporate weight bearing exercises now that you are on Arimidex and Lupron. (Such as, walking, jump rope and weight lifting/resistance training.) She also changed the dosage and time that you should take Cal Chew; 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening.

In order for the Block Center to keep their records up-to-date, they would like to be notified by Dr. Lakshmi Aggarwal’s office each time you have a Lupron shot. ( Fort Wayne Medical Oncology/Hematology)

Finally…. We got to the CT Scan results from 7-10-2012.

Your chest, lungs and heart looked good on the chest with contrast potion.

On the Abdomen and Pelvis with contrast; your gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, abdomen and pelvis areas were clear except for the liver.

“The lesions seen throughout the liver when compared to the prior Ct Scan on 3-21-2012 are smaller and less prominent, suggesting interval response to therapy! For example, one lesion, on the left hepatic lobe currently measures 12 x 8 mm. This same lesion on the last CT Scan was 12 x 16 mm!”

Jen commented that it was a fantastic response for this time period of treatment! She also said they will use this current CT Scan as a baseline to moniter Cathy’s new treatment plan of Arimidex, Lupron and Herceptin. They will also draw blood work to continue watching the tumor markers.

Jen went on to discuss the new drug, ‘Perjeta” which is now available at the Block Center. It works like Herceptin, however, this drug effects the entire HER family not just HER2. Right now it is only given as a first line treatment. It is given in conjunction with Herceptin and Taxotere (chemo). Cathy would be considered a second line treatment because she already began with Abraxane and Herceptin but they will see how it plays out with insurance coverage and who qualifies for the new drug.

We then discussed high dosage vitamin C treatment. Since Cathy has stopped Abraxane she could begin the vitamin C therapy. The Block Center infuses it 2 or 3 times per week beginning at 5 grams and going up to 50 grams. If a local doctor is willingly to administer the vitamin C then the Block Center will forward the protocol to them. All data supporting this treatment is from the University of Kansas.

Next, we talked about Metformin (500mg daily) and Jen recommended Wikipedia for more information.

Finally, we discussed ‘Anvirsel’ which is an oleander extract. More information can be found at www.saludintegral.hn

Before we left, Sarah (physical therapist) met with Cathy for subjective/objective testing on her chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy. Subjectively, Cathy thought her hands were at 75 – 80% functioning and her feet were 100%. When Sarah ran the objective sharp/dull test, Cathy’s fingers had definitely improved. She continues to have median nerve distribution neuropathy. Her hands were 50 -60% objectively. Her right foot showed a 100% correct response! Her left foot was 60%. Sarah recommends the continued use of cold laser therapy and she wants to retest Cathy in 6 weeks.

JUST ONE OF MANY PERKS

Went to the dentist, today, for a routine check and cleaning.

Don't know about you all, but I'm always wondering how my hair looks by the time the dental hygienist is finished doing what she does, brushing her arms all over my head in the process. And not just the noggin hair but that which grows above the eyes. WELL, I've got her fooled, because the hair on the head is much too short, and the eyebrow hairs are pretty much non-existent!

LET'S GET PHYSICAL

This morning I had my second CT scan. Looking forward to an encouraging report (in regards to scan) this Thursday when we head up to the Block Center in IL.

Went on an invigorating bike ride w/my 16 year old earlier this evening.Wouldn't mind doubling the time on the road to an hour, at least.
Physical exercise is crucial to a person's cancer-fighting arsenal. Muscle serves as the primary reservoir for glutamine, an amino acid that powers the anti-cancer immune defenses.** It's also great for the psyche.
Cycling is my favorite form of aerobic exercise but I also get to enjoy core, free weight, floor, and ball exercises.

In a letter from one of my 19 year old daughter's friends was this Scripture from II Cor 12:9--"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (she and her family have been praying for me)
God's Word is such an encouragement to me. I so appreciate everyone of the cards/notes (and I save ALL of them) that have been given me.

THANKFUL

It is human nature to want to give to others during their time(s) of need, so when we find ourselves on the other side of the fence, it is a most humbling thing. I am so very grateful for my husband, children, extended families, church family, friends and their families.... for the expression of love in their provision of meals, carpooling kids, financial help, endless research, my "A Team" for making sure I put to practice all that Dr. Block and his medical team have prescribed for my restoration to health and wellness (this list is by no means exhaustive).

"I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High." Psalm 7:17

ROMANS 5:1-5

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.  And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Blog Introduction

Cathy Guntle was first diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2010. One year later, she received the news that it had advanced to Stage lV cancer and had spread to her liver. At that time, she sought treatment at the Block Integrative Cancer Center in the Chicago area. Her first treatment began January 24, 2012.

Due to the unique approach at the Block Center, Cathy is on a special diet, she also takes 16 different supplements per day and is currently receiving cold laser therapy to help with the neuropathy caused by the chemotherapy. She also has a daily exercise program along with dedicated rest periods.

Currently, Cathy travels to Chicago every 3 weeks to meet with the Block Center specialists and to receive treatment. Cathy is quite diligent in meeting all of her treatment goals and does so with a great sense of humor.

Cathy's close friend Lori Gerig frequently travels with Cathy and her husband Mike to the Block Center to help take notes, as well as research options later. She helps organize and analyze, keeping any extra stress or concern from affecting Cathy.

This blog has been set up to support Cathy, as well as to keep friends and new acquaintances updated on her current status. Along with personal entries from Cathy, Lori may also include medical updates and helpful research she has found.

Thank you for your care and concern.
